Balloon catheter quality conversations tend to focus on forming, welding, and final inflation testing, the stages that are easiest to inspect and easiest to blame. Necking, the pre-forming process that reduces tube diameter before forming even starts, rarely gets the same attention. It should.
Necking sets the geometric starting point for everything that follows. When a tube's neck is even marginally inconsistent, in diameter, taper angle, or wall behaviour under heat, that inconsistency doesn't disappear. It moves downstream, where it shows up as forming defects, inflation irregularities, or tubes that need to be recalibrated by hand before they can continue through the line.

For most manufacturers, that recalibration becomes an accepted cost of doing business: an extra checkpoint, a skilled operator making adjustments by feel, a slower line than the process was designed to run. It's rarely questioned because it's rarely traced back to its actual source.
Why manual necking setups struggle to stay consistent
What a purpose-built necking process changes
This is the gap the SBN-5 Vertical Necking Machine was designed to close. It processes five tubes in a single pass, holds travel accuracy to ±0.1 mm, and uses a mass flow controller to keep gas and therefore heat consistent throughout the cycle. Settings live on a touchscreen interface, so a process that worked yesterday works exactly the same today, regardless of who's running the shift.
It also compresses the tube size range a line needs to support, from 0.4 mm to 7.5 mm diameter tubes, forming balloons from 1.5 mm to 33 mm without asking operators to work around heated components unprotected. A safety light curtain and pneumatically actuated clamps keep the people on the line as protected as the product they're producing.
The takeaway
When necking is precise and repeatable at the source, the calibration step manufacturers have learned to build in becomes far less necessary. And when a balloon catheter eventually reaches a cath lab, that consistency is exactly what a clinician is trusting was there from the first pass.
